Design support for large companies /Productdesign for innovative SME companies /Hot: role of design in a recesssion With design we could benefit from the recession because design always thrives on change, and every area of our lives is currently in flux. The economic crisis will not only transform finance and business, but the way we think and behave.
This means that designers will be called upon to advise recession-struck companies on how to cut costs without impeding efficiency. They will also be asked to exploit the entrepreneurial opportunities offered by the recession by developing austerity-friendly products and services.

Physical or virtual access to a designPeople judge books on their cover, internet sites on the first page and buildings on their entry. This first impression has a large impact on the perceptions and attitudes, which in turn have influence on the quality of the following interactions. When visiting some websites the first page loads slowly, sometimes with many ads and even still sometimes with pop-ups, while the visitor does not know if on this particular website he can find the information that he wants. Visitors get irritated from such websites and might not come back. The most important elements of a good starting point from a design are thresholds, points of orientation and a phased use of tempting elements. A good example are the Apple Stores.
Minimal thresholds
Entry points should not raise thresholds: no overloaded parking lots, noisy displays or sales people at the entrance of a shop.
Points of orientation
A good entry point makes is possible for people to orientate themselves on the available option. For example a shop entry that gives a good impression of the arrangement of the shop or websites with excellent navigation structures. Points of orientation should give the visitor enough time and space to freely make up his mind. People should not feel stressed by a busy environment or the presence of other people.
Phased use of tempting elements
Tempting elements are used to attract people and get them inside, like the headlines of a newspaper or beautifully styled products just behind the entrace of a shop. Using this elements in a phased way helps people over the threshold.
