During the design process we intensively use 3D CAD software. Using 3D models makes that concepts and designs become clear to all parties involved. The newest software improves the design process and shortens the “time to market” of a product.
CAD is an abriviation of computer aided design. It is a name for all sorts of computer applications that make design and manufacturing processes more efficient. The designers uses CAD to make his drawings faster and easier, the engineer makes strength calculations with the software and proto builders use the 3D models to program their manufacturing machines.
There are different kind of 3D modellers. Next to the traditional 3D drawing software, that are focussed on generating effeciently technical drawings according to existing engineering norms, there are also 3D modellers that are focussed on designing with the computer. The goal of these modellers is not the technical drawing, but a software prototype of the product that is to be designed. These software programs are called surface modellers or solid modellers and are also in the concept stage of a product useful. They offer powerful tools for input of 3D geometry like complex formed, double roundes surfaces, which are hard to draw in technical based design software.
