Lavazza

This solid coffee machine from Shmuel Linski makes only espresso. The contrast between the roughness and massiveness of the concrete, the refinement of the metal parts, and a special size of en espresso cup underlines the preciseness and perfection of the butyraceous cult dring.

Flowboard

Flowboard from Pieter Schouten and Mike Simonian, two design students and both snowboarders, performs like a snowboard, but on asphalt.

Deez nuts

This Nutcracker! from Tan Jun Yuan addresses the issue of cracking with the idea of a falling weight to crack the nut open. Really fun to use and squirrel approved.

Oluk

When irritations come forward and get turned into a play. Oluk from Erdem Selek is a coffee cup with a saucer designed in the form of a maze to enable a person to play when coffee drips on it. That would help us to get new insight and makes the hours spend on meetings and long negotiations more enjoyable.

Esslack Food Spray

One more step away from the natural food and a great invention for anybody, who likes to impress guests with some features from food design an eatable food spray, which has likewize the touch of the ancient king Midas who could turn things into gold and silver.

Inspiration: design effectiveness
It has been proved now scientifically: the performance of a product is up to 20% better if in the process of development attention has been paid to design. This is the outcome from a research done by the RSM, Erasmus University and the Technical University Delft.

Design effectiveness
The success of a new product is larger if during the stages of development much attention has been paid to design and if designers are involved in the developmental process of the product. More successfull products and a better company image result then in better overall company performance. There are the most important findings of the research from 2010 that has been conducted in cooperation with many Dutch manufacturing and service companies.

Better financial performance with more eye for design
In the research the design activitities are devided into two main groups: (1) experience design, that activates the senses, improves self expression and calls for emotions and (2) funtional design, that focusses on technology, functionality and ergonomics. The more designers are involved in the development of a new product, the more attention is paid to both experience and functional design. This larger attention leads to better financial performance of the product.

More freedom for designers
The research shows that a number of positive effects of design are stronger if designers get more freedom to investigate ideas that are outside the project scope. This suggests that companies wanting to improve their performance should give more freedom to designers. Apart from that innovation of design in the fields of experience and functionality has as well an overall positive effect on the quality of the product.

The Bent Hands

This clock designed by Giha Woo and Shingoeun has a single spiralling arm to indicate the time in different timezones around the world. For people with the global view and some deal of ignorance to the small details like minutes.

Hand Guard

Simple solution born from a real life need - we like it very much. The Hand Guard from Moon Sheen Hyeon is a protective silicon cover for your hands from oil splutters during cooking. The USP is that you can use the cover with almost any sized spoon, ladle, chopstick or tongs. Simple and functional!

Kaide Taide

Kaide Taide (by Finnish designers-duo Aamu Song and Johan Olin) transforms the spaces around the stairs and lobbies most typically just dead spaces with little lingering value into spaces for interaction, whether for a quick rest, a hearty chat or a glancing peep down the stairwell.

Square Coke Bottle

Design student Andrew Kim's Coke bottle redesign is an ambitious take on the iconic bottle, going square in the name of eco-friendliness. The new bottle shape would take up far less space in shipping pallets per bottle, and a push-up in the bottom large enough to accommodate the cap of the bottle beneath it would enable stacking. Said cap is offset for better drinkability.

Another interesting design feature is that underneath the label, the bottle is ribbed so that it can compress like an accordion, taking up even less space when it's time to go into the recycling truck.

Meeting Knives

We are completely used to the idea that our knives are stored in a wooden box in our kitchen, she is big, but it works. The company Deglon offers a new way of storing knives, which they call Meeting Knives.

Swirl headphones

Danish firm Kilo Design's designed those Swirl headphones, which have a Secret-Service-Agent-like spiral in the cord, meant to be worn behind your ear with the bud coming over the top, so they would not fall out easily.

Mountain Bike Gear

"On full suspension bikes, it is important to minimise unsprung weight to obtain the maximum performance. By removing the rear derailleur and cassette, the mass is relocated between the riders feet and away from the suspension, which gives much better small bump response, as well as increased grip and cornering ability," explains Chris Holloway, an industrial design student at London's Brunel University. "While every other part of the modern mountain bike has changed to meet the modern demands of downhill racing, the gear system has barely changed for more than 100 years."

Easy needle

The Easy Needle has a minor slit in the eye to allow the thread to slide in comfortably. Designed with care for the user.

Tokio shopping

People get tired after a few hours of shopping and would like to rest a bit. Japanese architect Ryuji Nakamura tought about that and design this solution, which is a bit hit in a shopping centre in Tokio.

ClipMe

This super small USB Clip got a RedDot award in 2010, designed by the Iranian designer Arman Emami. Really handy if you want to add digital information as well to an official letter...

Inspiration: imagination
Here's an insightful video from Eastman Innovation Labs featuring industrial design guru Richard Seymour, who talks about the gap between the capability of our tools and the extent of our imagination.

When Seymour talks about the future being "inhibited and retarded by a lack of imagination", it should be taken for the major challenge that it is. Seymour says: "Up until relatively recently what you imagined, such as the author, could extend beyond what you could do. But the weird thing at the moment is we're dealing with a world where what we can do extends beyond what we can imagine."

We don't need to talk about what we can do, we need think about what we should do. And that's the role of the designer, because they might be the only person in the room who's got that imagination, that capability to think beyond it.

PAK-FA

Although we do not like war-toys by its nature, the beauty and performance can be striking. Designed to compete against the F-22 JSF, the PAK-FA shares all of the key fifth generation attributes until now unique to the F-22 stealth: supersonic cruise, thrust vectoring, highly integrated avionics and a powerful suite of active and passive sensors.

While the PAK-FA firmly qualifies as a fifth generation design, it has two further attributes absent in the extant F-22 design. The first is extreme agility, resulting from advanced aerodynamic design, exceptional thrust/weight ratio performance and three dimensional thrust vectoring integrated with an advanced digital flight control system. The second attribute is exceptional combat persistence, the result of a 25,000 lb internal fuel load. And the fighter will be about three times as cheap as the JSF.

Humanscale M2

The bulky gas cylinder used by some other swing arms, which has a tendency to fail, has been swapped out for a more reliable and long-lived mechanical spring. And although the M2 is only made from 52% recycled material, the sum of its parts is 99% recyclable.

Lego

The influence from such nice building blocks like LEGO in our lives is hard to over estimate. The toys from LEGO took the first place on the dream list of small kids for their birthday, and also adults find many nice applications to play with LEGO, for instance in the rebuilding of classical photo's.

Shoes from ball

The soccer shoes from Sebastian E. are made from leader from recycled balls. In South America many kids have only one pair of shoes. Mostly they can do without shoes, but there are two cases where they need shoes: if they go on sundays with their mums to the church and when they play soccer. Of course shoes do not get better from playing soccer and that brought Sebastian, a teenager, to making soccer shoes from recycled balls. Read more about Sebastian /

LG Series 1 Retro Classic TV

Exclusively and lovely. Comes in either orange or brown, this retro gadget has a 14-inch screen, which can transition from full-color to black-and-white to sepia at the switch of a button. Great answer to the army of flat screens.

Fresh guard

The innovative plant perf concept aims to deliver fresh fruits and vegetables to consumers eliminating the use of chemicals that are harmful for health. The plants are attached to the device right after being cut from the field and they receive nutrients from the perf.

Tactilus

Here's a neat material technology you can integrate into your next product concept: it is an electronic skin that precisely measures pressure distribution and magnitude and relays that data to a computer. Sensor Products Inc. is a company specializing in the mapping of tactile pressure, and the data they glean can lead to design improvements for everything from windshield wipers to mattresses to body armour.

Le Whif

Amazing how many hours are spend thinking of new ways to present good old stuff, just because marketing dictates. A new fresh look at one of the most tested rituals is Le Whif. Instead of drinking it you'll inhale your morning joy. Each serving has about as much caffeine as a light espresso and contains less than a calorie.

The company says that none of the powder is inhaled into your lungs. Read more /

Scenter

Scenter from Kawamura Ganjavian is a depository of scents. One particular scent can bring back more memories than a thousand pictures. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to store smells the same way we store photographs?

Felt door organizer

One of the main rules for forgetful people, and especially for people who change their bags often, - keep all you need at one place near the door, at good sight. A door knob organizer like this would be quite helpful in this way! In case you are in hurry, just take the whole knob with you.

Inspiration: Speed camera lotery
The Fun Theory is based on the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better.

Can we get more people to obey the speed limit by making it fun to do? The idea here is capture on camera the people who keep to the speed limit. They would have their photos taken and registration numbers recorded and entered into a lottery.

Winners would recieve cash prizes and be notified by post. Better still, the winnig pot would come from the people who were caught speeding.

Utilizes tension

Utilizes tension from Italy Laniado is the basic thought behind his new objects. The walking stick is made from a broom handle that's split partway down the middle and held in tension by an orange cord and a wooden strut. Simple enough, but also weird and ingenious. The collapsible ladder—the series' centrepiece—is held together by a ratchet strap clamp, which also forms two of the rungs. The ladder packs down compactly, with the legs tucking into the routed grooves that held them up.

Turning garbage into art

While the whole world is thinking about how we could reduce disposals, Cheeming Boey elegantly turns them into timeless art objects. Each of his cups are unique, so who would dare after all to through them away?

Industrial Design News - May 2010
In this issue: Cell phone Telephoto lens, OO, Terra Cotta Cool, Cooka, Spaghetti Scrub, and more.

Cell phone Telephoto lens

Simply and easily top the camera on your cell phone, iPhone or any other smart phone with this external lens, sure to upgrade your phone’s camera to create high-quality photos. Coated optical lens for magnifying objects up to 8 times; clear focus; adjustable clamp for fitting most phones. And it looks so nice slightly retro!

Terra Cotta Cool

Arian Brekveld’s carafe uses the natural self-cooling properties of terra cotta to keep its contents cool. And its silicone base protects tables from scratches.

OO

The OO is a wireless projector by David Riesenberg capable of displaying high definition (1080p) data. Utilizing either a WIFI connection or internal SSD storage, the projector can operate independently from any wire for up to 3 hours based on an internal Li-Ion battery or using a single wire connected to a power source.

For grown up kids

Infantilism is already for quite some time one of the dominant streams in modern design. Austrian outdoor designers Viteo bring one of the icons of childhood back to adults. So charming.

Cooka

Maurizio Maiorana’s hotplate Cooka is a portable stovetop. You can even fold it up and take it with you or store it when you need counter space.

Spaghetti Scrub

These unique, spaghetti-like kitchen-cleaning scrubs from Goodbye Detergent! are an eco-friendly alternative to cleaning and taking care of your cookware and appliances. It is made from corncobs and peach pits so there is no need for soap or cleaner since the abrasives are enough to do the work.

Inspiration: GlucaShield
Diabetes is a growing problem, not only for adult, but also the population of kids having diabetes is growing yearly. As long as diabetes can not be cured, we need to find ways to make life with diabetes as good as possible.

Bluelarix Designworks comes with a new product to help kids and parents to live with diabetes and have it not control their lifes. The GlucaShield is a small, simple and light weight product for children having diabetes and for parents of those children. It is an glucagon hypoglycemia rescue kit made from medical grade COC material, so that it can be prefilled.

The GlucaShield is designed for kids that unexpectedly fall into a severe hypo, losing there consiousness. Bystanders, care takers or teachers can easily help the kid with the GlucaShield and give it an injection so that it stabilizes, after which a doctor should be called.

Besides being an emergency kit, the product is meant to give parents more peace of mind, knowing that their child is carrying such product that helps them in a hypo situation. The product makes the diabetes condition a topic to talk about with teachers and care takers and give tools to help them by unexperienced people.

Fun and sensibility

A substantial evidence from Monkey Business, that fun design does not need to be useless and that usefulness is far not always dull.

Flip remote

It has been already for quite some time an extremely challenging theme for designers: designing an user friendly and elegant remote control. Consumer electronics in the houses of people grow in number, fuse with each other, the number of options grow, making the challenge bigger and bigger. One of the proposed solutions is an all-in-one remote concept. It reminds users to the tabbed computer windows where different tabs contain different settings to perform particular tasks. The device comprises different surfaces for controlling different products with a name tab to make it easy to find controls for a product.
