Thanks and best wishes for 2008As the team of Bluelarix Designworks we wish to thank our clients and partners for the fruitful and pleasant cooperation of the past year. We were happy to see growth in our activities: more interesting projects and product designs.
We foresee a continuous growth for the next year, as our customers enjoyed our designs and new clients are waiting to start up product design projects with us in 2008. And who knows, maybe we will be able to serve you as well in some projects in the new year. For now, we wish all of you a happy, healty and inspiring 2008.

From the first week of January 2008 the office of Bluelarix Designworks will be moved to another bigger location in the historical center of the town of Bolsward. The office building is brand new. Bluelarix will be located on the first floor. By the end of January you will be most welcome to come and have a good coffee at our new office.

In our search for contributing with our designs to a healthy, diverse and abundant environment, we decided to support the Dutch Waddenvereniging, a foundation that helps preserve the Waddenzee, the sea close to us in Friesland which is a unique part of nature, connecting us with Germany and Scandinavia.

Sustainable designProducts cannot be designed in isolation if they are going to be truly sustainable. The typical product design and development process is fragmented and incoherent, and it is this lack of intergration that has led to many of the poor standards of design that currently prevail.
Designers and businesses who want to raise design standards to a respectable level are increasingly talking about designing sustainable products, but what is often overlooked is the fact that products do not exist in isolation, and so a product designed in isolation is unlikeley to ever be sustainable.
If sustainable product design is going to have maximum impact, then the process should begin with developing a sustainable business system. Products can then be designed as necessary to fit into this sustainable system.

Industrial Design NewsA toy train you can not collect
When we say "toy train" you're probably thinking "miniature model train," but in Japan the phrase has been taken to an entirely new level. Something like a daycare center on rails, Japan's Eiji-Mitooka-designed Omoden train, above, runs on the Kishigawa line in Wakayama prefecture. The train contains hundreds of toys, cribs for infants, and at the last stop on the line (Kishi Station), the stationmaster is...a cat. Named Tama-san.
Baby bath with a different form
It's true that we can't articulate quite why this bothers us, but something is decidedly off about this baby bath from the UK. The Dutch-designed Tummy Tub supposedly feels more womb-like to the baby--we'd love to see those focus group transcripts--but we can't help feel that Tupperware or Rubbermaid had some undue influence here, in the same way Hallmark invented Valentine's Day to move more product.
More importantly, we'd love to hear actual parents' perspectives on this one, so those with children, please sound off in the comments. Would you buy one of these?
