The isolation effect, often named “the von Restorff effect” after its founder Hedwig von Restorff, is a cognitive process, which makes us remember outstanding things much faster and better. Our attention is usually captured by salient, novel, surprising, or distinctive stimuli, which can differ in context or experience.

Just imagine you have a shopping list with 20 items, and one of them is underlined or even more: spelt with capital letters. Or a list of words where one word is outstanding like:
- Lamp
- Table
- Bad
- Chair
- Disneyworld 2009
- Wardrobe
- Sofa
It is obvious, that Disneyworld 2009 pops out. Another great example of this effect is used in the books of J.K.Rowling. The unusual words and spelling from those books about Harry Potter are very popular by kids.
There can also be a reverse effect. You might remember a unique item, but the attention that it grabs from you is removed from other items, thus you may in fact remember less overall.
Atypical words, special happenings (like first school day, or the first time flying), unusual, unexpected faces and many other things can make the message outstanding.
So, if you want people to remember something, make it stand out. Stay creative and be unique!

A tea ball

Traditions are great, but we should not forget, that even the most traditional subjects once were something quite revolutionairy. For those who like to experiment with established daily things and rituals, there is the Dione Tea Set. Described as a set of teacups with two hemispheres and a thin net preventing the tea leaves from entering the cup and involving some 180 degrees of rotation, the fuss is about keeping the aroma of the tea leaves alive.
