Forgiveness

Designs should help people to avoid mistakes and decrease the implications of mistakes that have been made.
Making mistakes is human, but it should not necessarily become a catastrophe. Forgiveness in the design avoids mistakes before they take place and minimizes the negative consequences of errors that have been made. Designs that stand tolerant towards mistakes give a feeling of safety and stability. They increase the willingness of the public to learn, to experiment and to use the design. Useful methods to implement forgiveness in the designs are: - Good affordances: physical features in the design that influence the intended use, for instance a plug with a unique form, that can only be connected to sockets which are right.
- Reversibility of actions: one or more actions can be reversed if something goes wrong or if the intention of the user has changed.

- Safety nets: an instrument or process that minimizes the consequences of a catastrophic mistake, like the ejector seat of a jet-fighter.
- Confirmation: the intention of the user is first verified before actions are allowed, like a lock that first need to be opened before activating an installation.
- Warning: signs, reminders or alarms are used to warn for danger, for instance a traffic sign that warns the driver for a sharp turn.
- Aid: support with important activities, troubleshooting and recovery of errors, like a helpdesk of documentation.
