Satisficing On the 11th of April 1970 the Apollo 13 was launched. After 56 hours an electrical error took place, the mission was aborted and the crew had to move from the command module to the moon lander. Unfortunately the carbon dioxide filters of the moon lander were designed for two persons for 2 days, the time they needed to perform a landing on the moon. But now three astronauts needed to use the moon lander to return to earth, for which they needed about four days.  The square carbon dioxide filters in the abandoned command module had the right capacity, but did not fit in the filter holder of the moon lander. With help of the technicians on earth and available materials like plastic bags, carton from logbooks and tape the astronauts succeeded to build an improvised adaptor for the big square filters. The solution was to put into operation immediately. It was far from optimal, but did work satisfying. SatisficingIt is not always the best decision to go for the optimal solution. In some cases the chance of success of a design is getting larger by choosing for solutions that somehow comply (satisfice). There are three kinds of problems when satisficing should be considered: very complex problems, problems that are strongly limited by time and problems where every extra leads to less returns. The designers of Swatch understood that watches with even a higher accuracy did not appeal extra to their customers. An accuracy of less then a minute on a day was good enough. This "good-enough" standard made it possible for the designers of Swatch to put their resources on style improvements and cost reductions instead of further optimization of the accuracy.
